Northern Norway: Defense Conference in Bodø

The US Navy commissioned its newest destroyer, the USS Ted Stevens, into active service during a formal ceremony in Whittier, Alaska, on October 3.

That is reported by U.S. Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and the US Department of War.

The ship and its commissioning location honor the legacy of the late Sen. Ted Stevens, a decorated combat aviator and lifelong champion for the state of Alaska and the nation's armed forces, the press release states.

Selecting the strategic deep-water port of Whittier highlights Alaska's enduring maritime significance and the historic partnership between the state and the Navy.

"From the Pacific campaigns of World War II to modern Arctic maritime operations, the Navy and Alaska share a deep commitment to homeland defense. The commissioning in Whittier emphasizes the Navy's persistent operational presence in high-latitude environments to deter northern flank aggression and safeguard critical maritime routes," it further reads.

Following post-commissioning operations, the USS Ted Stevens will transit to its permanent home port in Norfolk, Virginia, fully prepared to deploy worldwide.

A series of internal Department of National Defence documents suggest Canadian troops were ill-prepared and occasionally ill-equipped for the harsh conditions they faced last winter during a major training exercise with American forces in Alaska.

This according to CBC.

The evaluation reports, obtained by CBC News, show the military has a lot to learn and a long way to go to rebuild its capability to defend the Arctic.

The training involved over 400 members of the 3rd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment (3RCR) which was folded into a much larger U.S. Army brigade during Exercise Global Response in February at the Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center, north of Fairbanks, Alaska.

The Carney government has committed to an almost year-round presence in the Far North and the reports indicate, among other things, that troops will need to learn to rely less on technology and more on basic skills in order to fight and survive, according to defence experts.

Canada has signed a non-binding agreement with the Swedish defence and technology company Saab to purchase six GlobalEye surveillance aircraft, reports Forsvarets forum.

The aircraft will be built in Canada ans used mainly for surveillance in the Arctic. The agreement also includes the purchase of GlobalEye systems and training.

Canada had been in talks with several U.S. companies about similar agreements, but ultimately chose Saab as its supplier.

North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), Danish and NATO forces are conducting combined air defense training during Operation ARCTIC VANGUARD (OAV) 26-4.2, integrating fighters, aerial refueling and airborne command and control to strengthen the defense of North America’s northern approaches.

NORAD fighter aircraft are operating from Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, alongside aerial refueling and search and rescue aircraft operating from Bagotville, Québec.

This combined activity extends to Keflavik, Iceland, where Royal Danish Air Force fighters and a CL-604 Challenger are participating in training scenarios and air activity alongside a French multirole tanker transport aircraft and NATO airborne warning and control aircraft.

Aircrews are planning and executing defensive counterair training missions focused on integrating allied fighters against advanced simulated air threats. The missions emphasize tactical data sharing and secure communications to exchange information and coordinate actions among participating forces.

Norway and Canada are set to draft an agreement on closer defense cooperation and to train and operate more closely together in the Arctic.

Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed on this during a meeting in Ottawa on Sunday, NTB reports.

"Canada is a close partner for Norway and an important NATO ally. We share many fundamental values and have common interests in the Arctic. In turbulent times, Norway needs a broader foundation to stand on. We are now further strengthening our cooperation with Canada," Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre says in a press release.

Earlier this year, Norway and Canada established a strategic partnership covering areas such as Arctic security, support for Ukraine, energy, critical minerals, space, artificial intelligence, and climate.

In July, Canada joined the submarine cooperation initiative between Norway and Germany. The three countries are set to acquire identical submarines.

"This will strengthen our—and NATO’s—ability to monitor maritime areas in the north. It is crucial for our shared security," says Støre.

Norway and Canada also intend to increase cooperation between their respective defense industries. In a joint statement, the prime ministers affirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine.

Furthermore, the Norwegian and Canadian polar institutes will collaborate more closely on Arctic research.

For the first time in recent times, conscripts have been sent to an exercise in Greenland, where they will practice and train military skills in unfamiliar terrain, participate in operational service during the Arctic Endurance exercise, and collaborate with their Greenlandic colleagues in Arctic Basic Training (Arktisk Basisuddannelse).

Early in August, the first group of 11-month conscripts from the Schleswig Infantry Regiment landed at Nuuk Airport. For the first time, conscripts will participate in operational service during exercise Arctic Endurance, while also training and strengthening their soldier skills.

It is also the first time a team of conscripts has been deployed to Greenland.

Exercise Arctic Endurance is being conducted in close cooperation with the Greenlandic government, Naalakkersuisut. It has been decided to continue and strengthen the effort through 2026 by increasing the Danish Armed Forces' military presence and exercise activity in the Arctic and the North Atlantic. This is being done in close cooperation with several NATO allies, the Danish Armed Forces writes.

"That is the situation now", says Norways Minister of Justice and Emergency Preparedness Astri Aas-Hansen (Labor).

She is asking 357 Norwegian municipalities to be ready, according to The National Defence Magazine.

Both she and the Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Preparedness (DSB) says that war is no longer just something to be see on a screen.

"We must all take stock of the security situation. Municipalities, counties, companies and all types of businesses must think: What do I need to plan and be prepared for in order to maintain as normal operations as possible in a crisis", says Aas-Hansen.

Two documents were released from the authorities to the municipalities.

DSB has prepared a guide on what are the tasks and jobs of Norwegian municipalities in the event of a fire. The second document is about practice.

DSB and the Norwegian government have looked at how Ukrainian society has functioned and organized itself after the full-scale invasion.

The guidelines for war training in all Norwegian municipalities are part of the government's Total Defence Year 2026.

During the Cold Response exercise in March, the police received many reports of drone sightings.

They accounted for 40 percent of suspicious incidents that, according to Lars Lindén, head of the intelligence and prevention section at the Tromsø police district, “are being investigated in light of the current security situation during Cold Response.”

This was reported by the National Defence Magazine.

The incidents concern both drones that are participating in the exercise and hostile drones that are engaged in information gathering for a foreign state.

The National Defence Magazine has been in contact with the police and the Norwegian Armed Forces following the exercise to find out what drone sightings they have mapped, in addition to the use of drones in the exercise itself.

However, neither the Norwegian Armed Forces nor the police have made any attempt to determine whether any of the sightings may actually be of a suspicious nature.

Three new commanders' quarters are to be built at Evenes Air Station in Northern Norway. The buildings will accommodate 156 dormitories for commanders.

This is clear after The Norwegian Defence Estates Agency recently entered into a contract with Skanska Prefabrication Factory worth 256 million NOK.

"It is very pleasing that new commanders' quarters are being established at Evenes. People are the Armed Forces' most important resource, and good living conditions are important for recruiting and retaining personnel in the defense sector. The expansion of the housing capacity at Evenes is one of several steps in the work to strengthen the Armed Forces' preparedness in the north in the years to come", says Marte Gerhardsen (Labor), State Secretary at the Ministry of Defense, according to a press release.

The Swedish Armed Forces' first military reconnaissance and surveillance satellite has been launched into space. This means that the Swedish Armed Forces are now operational in the space domain and will have their own national capacity to detect and analyze threats globally, the Swedish Armed Forces announced in a press release.

The Swedish Armed Forces' new satellite is part of the military space program in which Sweden is expanding its presence in space with around ten satellites in the coming years.

The satellite takes high-resolution images from low Earth orbit (LEO). The satellite was launched by SpaceX from Vanderberg Space Base in California, USA.

This year's physical edition of the Arctic Security Forces Roundtable (ASFR) was held in Iceland at the end of March.

The forum – co-chaired by Norway and the US European Command – brings together senior military leaders from the seven allied Arctic states, as well as from the observer states of France, the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Also present were representatives of the US Northern Command and NATO JFC Norfolk, which has now been granted permanent observer status in ASFR.

The military leaders exchanged views on security challenges in the Arctic, with a focus on building shared situational awareness and coordinated approaches to deterrence and defense in the region. The NATO Arctic Sentry initiative was highlighted in this context.

They also visited Keflavík Air Station and gained insight into Iceland's defense-related roles and responsibilities. Last year's conference took place in Kirkenes, Northern Norway.

Canada and Denmark have signed a defense cooperation agreement on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

The agreement follows the Trump Administration's threats to take over Canada and was signed by Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty and Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, together with his Greenlandic and Faroese counterparts, Vivian Motzfeldt and Sirið Stenberg.

"Canada is an Arctic nation — and we will defend the North," McGuinty said in a statement after signing the agreement.

The Danish Ministry of Defense reports that the agreement will strengthen defense cooperation between the two countries in a number og areas, including defense innovation, technology, capacity building, and training, exercise and education.

NATO has launched the mission to strengthen its presence in the Arctic, part of an effort to defuse tensions within the alliance prompted by the U.S. president's push to acquire Greenland from Denmark.

"Our F-35 contribution strengthens the overall presence in the region and underscores Denmark's role as an active ally in the Arctic and North Atlantic," Denmarks minister of defense, Trouls Lund Poulsen said in a statement.

Poulsen also expects the United States to contribute to the NATO mission, he told reporters ahead of the Munich Security Conference.
