Alaska: Allied Forces Integrate Airpower During Defence Operation

Norway and Canada are set to draft an agreement on closer defense cooperation and to train and operate more closely together in the Arctic.

Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed on this during a meeting in Ottawa on Sunday, NTB reports.

"Canada is a close partner for Norway and an important NATO ally. We share many fundamental values and have common interests in the Arctic. In turbulent times, Norway needs a broader foundation to stand on. We are now further strengthening our cooperation with Canada," Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre says in a press release.

Earlier this year, Norway and Canada established a strategic partnership covering areas such as Arctic security, support for Ukraine, energy, critical minerals, space, artificial intelligence, and climate.

In July, Canada joined the submarine cooperation initiative between Norway and Germany. The three countries are set to acquire identical submarines.

"This will strengthen our—and NATO’s—ability to monitor maritime areas in the north. It is crucial for our shared security," says Støre.

Norway and Canada also intend to increase cooperation between their respective defense industries. In a joint statement, the prime ministers affirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine.

Furthermore, the Norwegian and Canadian polar institutes will collaborate more closely on Arctic research.

For the first time in recent times, conscripts have been sent to an exercise in Greenland, where they will practice and train military skills in unfamiliar terrain, participate in operational service during the Arctic Endurance exercise, and collaborate with their Greenlandic colleagues in Arctic Basic Training (Arktisk Basisuddannelse).

Early in August, the first group of 11-month conscripts from the Schleswig Infantry Regiment landed at Nuuk Airport. For the first time, conscripts will participate in operational service during exercise Arctic Endurance, while also training and strengthening their soldier skills.

It is also the first time a team of conscripts has been deployed to Greenland.

Exercise Arctic Endurance is being conducted in close cooperation with the Greenlandic government, Naalakkersuisut. It has been decided to continue and strengthen the effort through 2026 by increasing the Danish Armed Forces' military presence and exercise activity in the Arctic and the North Atlantic. This is being done in close cooperation with several NATO allies, the Danish Armed Forces writes.

"That is the situation now", says Norways Minister of Justice and Emergency Preparedness Astri Aas-Hansen (Labor).

She is asking 357 Norwegian municipalities to be ready, according to The National Defence Magazine.

Both she and the Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Preparedness (DSB) says that war is no longer just something to be see on a screen.

"We must all take stock of the security situation. Municipalities, counties, companies and all types of businesses must think: What do I need to plan and be prepared for in order to maintain as normal operations as possible in a crisis", says Aas-Hansen.

Two documents were released from the authorities to the municipalities.

DSB has prepared a guide on what are the tasks and jobs of Norwegian municipalities in the event of a fire. The second document is about practice.

DSB and the Norwegian government have looked at how Ukrainian society has functioned and organized itself after the full-scale invasion.

The guidelines for war training in all Norwegian municipalities are part of the government's Total Defence Year 2026.

During the Cold Response exercise in March, the police received many reports of drone sightings.

They accounted for 40 percent of suspicious incidents that, according to Lars Lindén, head of the intelligence and prevention section at the Tromsø police district, “are being investigated in light of the current security situation during Cold Response.”

The incidents concern both drones that are participating in the exercise and hostile drones that are engaged in information gathering for a foreign state.

The National Defence Magazine has been in contact with the police and the Norwegian Armed Forces following the exercise to find out what drone sightings they have mapped, in addition to the use of drones in the exercise itself.

However, neither the Norwegian Armed Forces nor the police have made any attempt to determine whether any of the sightings may actually be of a suspicious nature.

This year's physical edition of the Arctic Security Forces Roundtable (ASFR) was held in Iceland at the end of March.

The forum – co-chaired by Norway and the US European Command – brings together senior military leaders from the seven allied Arctic states, as well as from the observer states of France, the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Also present were representatives of the US Northern Command and NATO JFC Norfolk, which has now been granted permanent observer status in ASFR.

The military leaders exchanged views on security challenges in the Arctic, with a focus on building shared situational awareness and coordinated approaches to deterrence and defense in the region. The NATO Arctic Sentry initiative was highlighted in this context.

They also visited Keflavík Air Station and gained insight into Iceland's defense-related roles and responsibilities. Last year's conference took place in Kirkenes, Northern Norway.

Canada and Denmark have signed a defense cooperation agreement on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

The agreement follows the Trump Administration's threats to take over Canada and was signed by Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty and Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, together with his Greenlandic and Faroese counterparts, Vivian Motzfeldt and Sirið Stenberg.

"Canada is an Arctic nation — and we will defend the North," McGuinty said in a statement after signing the agreement.

The Danish Ministry of Defense reports that the agreement will strengthen defense cooperation between the two countries in a number og areas, including defense innovation, technology, capacity building, and training, exercise and education.

NATO has launched the mission to strengthen its presence in the Arctic, part of an effort to defuse tensions within the alliance prompted by the U.S. president's push to acquire Greenland from Denmark.

"Our F-35 contribution strengthens the overall presence in the region and underscores Denmark's role as an active ally in the Arctic and North Atlantic," Denmarks minister of defense, Trouls Lund Poulsen said in a statement.

Poulsen also expects the United States to contribute to the NATO mission, he told reporters ahead of the Munich Security Conference.
