Arctic Football Team Makes History in Madrid
Bodø/Glimt reaches Champions League knockout rounds after comeback win against Atletico Madrid.
In what turned out to be a historic match on Wednesday, Arctic football team Bodø/Glimt made its way to the Champions League knockout stages with a 2-1 win against Atletico Madrid.
After 15 minutes of the match, Norwegian and former Bodø/Glimt player Alexander Sørloth headed 1-0 for Atletico at the Metropolitano Stadium in the Spanish capital.
However, Bodø/Glimt made a comeback about 15 minutes later when defender Fredrik Sjøvold scored from a close range.
Bodø/Glimt forward Kasper Høgh scored the winning goal in 59th minute.
The team from Northern Norway brought the Champions League north of the Arctic Circle for the very first time this season.
Last week, Glimt became the first Arctic football team to win a Champions League match, stunning Manchester City with a 3-1 win at Aspmyra stadium in Bodø.
"Extremely huge"
"What we have delivered now is extremely huge. It's very fun to be a part of," said Glimt's captain Patrick Berg to VG after the game.
"An extremely impressive and inspiring achievement, says Kristoffer Løkberg, NRK's football expert.
"On Wednesday evening, Atlético Madrid was shocked by Bodø/Glimt, while 'Football Europe' is wondering what on earth is going on," commentator Daniel Røed-Johansen in Norwegian news paper Aftenposten wrote after the game.
On Friday this week, Glimt's next playoff opponents are drawn, and will either face Real Madrid or Inter Milan, Avisa Nordland reports.
