Many people in the northern Finnish municipality of Sodankylä and the Kainuu region have recently lost their jobs. The Finnish government will now allocate 350,000 euros (equivalent to around NOK 3.6 million) to support their return to work.

The funds are allocated under the sudden structural change scheme and will be used, among other things, for skills development.

In Sodankylä, 77 people have been made redundant as a result of restructuring negotiations at the Kevitsa mine. 50 of them are residents of the municipality and the layoffs affect a relatively small local labour market.

In Kainuu, around 200 people have lost their jobs as a result of simultaneous downsizing in several companies, including Skoda Transtech and Terrafame.

“During a structural change, the most important thing is to ensure that people receive the help they need in the difficult situation that has arisen. With this funding, we are directly supporting measures in Sodankylä and Kainuu that help those made redundant find a new direction in working life as quickly and effectively as possible,” says Finnish Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen (National Coalition Party).
