Summer Greetings From High North News

We of the High North News editorial staff wish our readers a happy summer holiday. We will be back in August with more news from and about the North!

Dear Reader. Once again, we are breaking down the boundaries between culture and journalism, both crucial for freedom of expression and democratic values. In this spring's last newsletter, watch our debates from the True Northern Arts Festival, meet students who spend the summer in the Arctic, and learn about Arctic security.

Over a hundred international students are flocking to Northern Norway to participate in summer studies at Nord University. The opportunity to learn about the high north was important, they tell journalist Hilde Bye.

News from the Nordics

Construction has begun in western Finland on the first U.S. Coast Guard Arctic Security Cutter.

And steel company Stegra has received EUR 1.4 billion to enable the completion of the company's green steel plant in Northern Sweden.

Successful cooperation

Again, High North News and the True Northern Arts Festival invited participants to discussions about the high north in turbulent times. High North News is and has always been more than a newspaper. Part of our mission is to participate in the public debate about, from and for the Arctic. A mandate that we also bring with us into collaboration with the festival, which has been very successful for five years.

The debates were led by editor and commentator Arne O. Holm's steady hand and can be seen on High North News.

We put the spotlight om democracy under pressure, as the great powers are in conflict, and security policy is unpredictable. We asked the panel: What does the development in the USA mean for Norway, NATO and the Arctic?

Finland was also on the menu, with a different history from Norway, but also much in common. We asked the panel: How do we build trust, preparedness and resilience in society? What does it mean to be prepared without being afraid?

Still, defense cooperation with the US stands firm, Norway’s Chief of Defence tells journalist Astri Edvardsen.

"It takes time to land after discussing the security of the U.S. and Europe with our leading experts", writes Holm and looks back on three debates with more than 500 spectators present during our mix of politics and culture.

Russian gas and shipping

South Korea’s Pohang City has launched a study to position Yeongilman Port as a specialized hub for Arctic shipping.

And two LNG cargoes from Russia’s Yamal LNG and Arctic LNG 2 projects are heading east along the Northern Sea Route.

Also read that Spain has doubts even if Brussels insists the bloc remains on track to sever its remaining gas ties with Moscow from Jan. 1, 2027

You can read this and more in High North News. We are closed for summer holidays in July, but we are already looking forward to autumn and promise exciting stories, debates and important news from the Arctic.

Stay cool! Summer greetings from editor-in-chief Trine Jonassen
