Bodø/Glimt Out of the Champions League After Historic Run in the Tournament
Sporting made an impressive comeback when beating Bodø/Glimt in Lisbon on Tuesday. While the Arctic football team is out of the Champions League, they have made Norwegian football history this season.
Portuguese Sporting CP hosted Bodø/Glimt on Tuesday evening for the second of two matches in the Round of 16 in the Champions League.
The result of the match determined which of the two advances to the quarter-finals of the tournament, which is considered by many to be the world's most prestigious club tournament.
Massive pressure
Bodø/Glimt had a 3-0 lead after the match at Aspmyra stadium in Bodø last week, which was quickly battled back by the home team.
At Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, the Portuguese team opened with high pressure, and the pressure continued during the whole match.
Sporting CP created several big chances, and the massive pressure resulted in a goal after 34 minutes when Gonçalo Inácio headed in 1-0, putting the home team in the lead.
One-way traffic
Sporting showed a different side in this match and lifted their game significantly after the match at Aspmyra.
The pressure in the first half continued in the second half, and Sporting scored two more goals.
After the end of regular time, the score was 3-0. And with an aggregate of 3-3, extra-time was added.
Sporting's Maxi Araújo scored after just a few minutes into the first half of the extra-time, which put the Portuguese team ahead.
After 120 minutes, Sporting scored once again, and the match ended 5-0.
"There has been a class difference throughout the match. Sporting has been clearly better than Bodø/Glimt," said NRK's football expert Eirik Horneland after the match.
Norwegian, and Arctic, football history
The adventure in the Champions League is over for Bodø/Glimt this time, but the team from the North takes with them great achievements from the tournament.
"Even though it was a disappointing match tonight, Kjetil Knutsen and the team have given tens of thousands of Bodø residents memories they will never forget," states TV2's football expert Jesper Mathisen.
Glimt has taken historic steps this season with their advancement in the Champions League, becoming the first Norwegian team to win a match in the knockout rounds in the prestigious tournament.
Glimt also became the first Arctic football team to win a Champions League match, with a 3-1 victory against none other than Manchester City at Aspmyra Stadium in Bodø.
The team from the Arctic has stunned opponents like Atletico Madrid, when they secured advancement in the tournament away against the Spanish team.
Glimt also made Norwegian football history when they sent Italian Inter out of the Champions League with a 3-1 win at San Siro in Milan.
