JFC Norfolk Deputy Commander visited Sweden’s Northern Military Region

In October, Canada's Defence and Coast Guard conducted a whole-of-government crisis response exercise with a number of civilian actors in Whitehorse, Yukon.

The exercise took place within the framework of Operation Nanook-Tatigiit and included participants from Public Safety Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian Coast Guard, the Canadian Red Cross, Indigenous Services Canada, the Yukon First Nations government and communities, as well as territorial and municipal authorities.

The scenario simulated a complex emergency threatening critical infrastructure and public safety in northern communities, requiring participants to coordinate response efforts, address emerging challenges, and make timely decisions under demanding conditions.

“Operation Nanook-Tatigiit strengthens the whole-of-government approach to Arctic defence and security. Through integrated planning and collaboration, we improve coordination, build shared awareness of the operating environment, and reinforce our collective ability to address complex and evolving safety and security challenges across the Arctic and North,’’ says Commander of the Canadian Joint Operations Command, Lieutenant-General Steve Boivin.

Through the Nordic Blood Supply Project, northern Sweden, Norway and Finland will cooperate to secure access to blood during crisis and war in the Nordic region.

The goal is for the regions of the Nordic Calotte to be able to help one another when the need becomes great, SVT writes.

Sweden has been part of the Nordic health preparedness agreement since 2003, but there has been no common arrangement for the blood supply. Different rules and laws in the countries have made the exchange of blood difficult.

”This project is one of the most prioritised preparedness planning initiatives currently udner way up here,” Henrik Brännholm, emergency physician in Region Norrbotten, tells SVT.

This week, Nordic ministers and parliamentarians are gathered for the Nordic Council session in Helsinki, Finland.

Following a foreign policy debate in plenary on Wednesday, Denmark will host a foreign ministers' meeting on the Arctic and the broader security policy context. Greenland and the Faroe Islands will also participate in the meeting.

"Russia continues its brutal war against Ukraine, which is also a direct threat to European and Nordic security. The Nordic countries stand unwaveringly together in support of Ukraine, and we will continue to send an unequivocal signal of support to Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia. At the same time, we will talk openly about the Arctic, where the security situation requires close Nordic cooperation," says Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M).

The 78th session of the Nordic Council will take place in Helsinki, Finland, next week.

From Norway, Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide and Minister for Nordic Cooperation Åsmund Aukrust will participate.

On board the ship are F-35 fighter jets, Merlin helicopters of the Mk2 and Mk4 types, as well as Wildcat helicopters and Malloy drones.

HMS Prince of Wales is accompanied by the British destroyer HMS Dauntless and the Norwegian frigate HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen.

Finland’s Minister of Defence, Antti Häkkänen, has decided to usse a new decree from the Ministry of Defence regarding the use of Defence Forces vehicles.

”With the new decree, we are promoting military mobility in the changed security environment. With the reform, we will ensure that the operating conditions of the Defence Forces, traffic safety and military mobility, which is central to Finland's defence, form a functional whole,” Häkkänen said in a press release from the Ministry.

According to Yle, the reform will make it easier for Norwegian and Swedish military vehicles to enter Finland without special control measures at the border.

The same practice will also be introduced in ports and airports.

The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) has registered growing interest from state threat actors in Norway's coastal and maritime areas.

"We are seeing very significant interest in the Arctic and the High North from a number of countries. This mainly concerns Russia, but also China," Jon Fitje Hoffmann, director at PST, tild the norwegian broadcaster NRK.

According to Hoffmann, Russia is seeking to map Norwegian ports, communications cables, ans the thousands of kilometres of oil and gas pipelines on the seabed.

He said this could be part of general intelligence gathering, but could also serve as preparation for potential acts of sabotage.

PST is now urging the public to report unusual activity, including incidents that fall outside the normal pattern and people or vessels behaving suspiciously.

PST also advises individuals and businesses to be alert to unexplained friend requests on social media.

Sweden’s Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson is giving up her attempt to form a new government, Swedish Yle reports.

She was given the task after the left-green opposition won the parliamentary election by a narrow margin.

The decision comes after the Left Party (Vänsterpartiet) announced that it would support the Moderate Party’s candidate, Andreas Norlén, for the position of Speaker of the Riksdag.

Government negotiations were expected to be challenging, as both the Left Party and the Centre Party (Centerpartiet) have said that they cannot sit in the same government.

Andersson says that the Left Party’s support for Norlén has created a new political constellation in the Riksdag. She therefore believes that there are no longer sufficient conditions for the government negotiations to succeed.

Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar rejects in an interview with Expressen that the party has entered into an alliance with the Moderate Party.

The Social Democrats have not yet announced whom the party will nominate as Speaker. Norlén is therefore the only candidate at the moment.

The task of forming a new government will now be given to someone else.

The operation is also supported by a French aerial refuelling aircraft, a Danish surveillance aircraft and a NATO AWACS aircraft.

US President Donald Trump has previously criticised Denmark for insufficient security measures in Greenland, citing threats from Russia and China.

Kebnekaise’s ice-covered southern peak continues to melt, although at a much slower rate than in recent years, reports SVT.

This year’s measurement puts the peak at 2,088.3 metres above sea level, 10 centimetres lower than at the same time last year.

The ice-free northern peak, which stands at 2,096.8 metres, has therefore been Sweden’s highest point for the eighth consecutive year.

"This year’s limited melting is small compared with previous years, but the peak is still losing height despite the cold summer," says Johanna Dahlkvist of the Tarfala Research Station at Stockholm University.

The southern peak has lost around 30 metres since systematic measurements began in 1951. Last year, it lost 1.5 metres, while melting reached as much as 3.4 metres in 2024.

Norway has eased restrictions that previously prevented allied surveillance aircraft from tracking Russian nuclear submarines operating out of bases on the Kola Peninsula, reports the Barents Observer.

The change means that allies can now operate closer to Norwegian areas than before, provided the missions are coordinated with Norwegian authorities.

The adjustment comes in response to an increased allied need for situational awareness in the Barents Sea and a more challenging security environment in the High North.

Norwegian authorities emphasize that operations will remain controlled and predictable.

The Swedish government is standing by its decision to grant the mining company Boliden an extraction permit for the planned copper mine in Laver, outside Älvsbyn municipality in northern Sweden, reports SVT.

The decision was originally made in September 2025 but was appealed by two environmental organizations.

The Government of Greenland has received inquiries that cruise ships sailing in certain fjord areas are perceived as a burden on the local population and the affected natural areas. The inquiries concern, among other things, the impact on wildlife, noise pollution and the desire to preserve the areas' natural and recreational values.

This is stated by the Greenland government, Naalakkersuisut, in a press release.

In the statement, the government writes that it views positively the growing interest in Greenland as a travel destination and recognizes that cruise tourism contributes significantly to the development of the tourism industry, but also emphasizes that tourism development occurs on a sustainable basis and with respect for the local population, nature and wildlife.

Against this background, the Government of Greenland recommends that cruise ship navigation in fjord areas be avoided or limited as much as possible.

"The purpose of the recommendation is to limit the impact on vulnerable natural areas and wildlife, and to accommodate the wishes of the local population to preserve the areas' recreational values and opportunities for hunting and fishing."
